It has been a long time tradition at our school that the 5th grade creates these amazing Gingerbread Structures. We call them structures and not houses, because they are so much more than houses.
Students are each given a blank piece of paper and told to plan out their structures beforehand. They are not limited in their imagination beyond the limitations of the materials provided. Students are encouraged to stretch their imagination and try any kind of structure. Very patient parents melt sugar in an electric skillet until it is completely molten. Then one by one, the student architect describes what the structure will look like as the parent applies the melted sugar to the edges of the graham crackers to use as the "glue" that will keep them together. Students are then turned loose with frosting, candy and other accents to finish up their creations. The results are always amazing!
